With the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), many changes have occurred in the concept of obsessive-compulsive disorder and other spectrum disorders. Moving outside of the obsessive-compulsive disorder category, a new group of diagnoses has emerged called “obsessive-compulsive and related disorders” (ORCD). This new classification provides the opportunity to deepen our understanding of this unique problem and address new questions.
The Oxford Handbook of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders, Second Edition, provides the latest information from leading authors on the epidemiology, phenomenology, assessment, and treatment of ORCD. The book begins by reviewing the prevalence and forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder), and exfoliation disorder (hair picking disorder). the skin). The authors of each chapter then discuss contemporary concepts of OCRD, including neural, genetic, behavioral, and cognitive. Here, we review assessment strategies and then use biological and psychological therapies, including drug therapy, neurosurgical techniques, behavioral therapy, and cognitive pain therapy. Finally, the book examines the presentation and treatment of TOCR across cultures and in specific populations, including children and adults.
