A collection of 25 fearless narratives and thought pieces from the forefront of the radical mental health movement The problems of persons classified as “mentally ill” include overmedication, police brutality, electroconvulsive therapy, involuntary hospitalization, traumas that result in extreme altered states, and suicidal ideation. Although a lot has been written on the structural issues with our mental health care system, this book gives voice to people who have firsthand experience with mental illness and are frequently left out of the conversation, such as members of the LGBTQ+ community and people of color. It aims to change the focus of the debate from mental disease to mental health by identifying viable alternatives to the “Mental Health Industrial Complex.”
